Buildings and Grounds

The Buildings and Grounds department is committed to providing our students and staff with a safe, clean, and comfortable environment. Over 900,000 square feet of property is cleaned and maintained by our caring and dedicated custodial staff each day. 

When it comes to the upkeep of the appearance of the exterior areas, our dedicated grounds staff maintains hundreds of acres of property throughout the district. Duties includes grass cutting/trimming, landscape projects, athletic field maintenance, and snow removal.

In addition we have knowledgeable trade mechanics that are responsible for the general upkeep of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and painting within the facilities. 

• The development and management of construction projects, maintenance and repair projects
• Oversee service/maintenance contracts and contractors to insure services are rendered appropriately
• Compliance of applicable federal, state, and local regulations related to district facilities
• Oversee and adhere to standards as outline under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA)

Indoor Air Quality

Capital School District recognizes the fact that good indoor air quality (IAQ) is important to the health, comfort and productivity of our staff and students. The District is committed to providing a work environment that is free of recognized hazards and to investigate complaints that may be related to poor indoor air quality (IAQ).

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants. IAQ covers a broad range of issues. Some of the items that fall into IAQ may be temperature extremes, elevated relative humidity, stuffy air, odors, and mold.

The presence of transient odors does not necessarily constitute poor indoor air quality. Transient odors may include smells pulled in on the outside air such as vehicle exhaust or roofing repair work and paint or construction odors within a building. This is not to say that some transient odors will not cause short term headaches or mucous membrane irritation. Generally, these odors are short-lived and do not present a long-term health hazard.

Addressing Indoor Air Quality Concerns

Per Title 14 §4303, any individual desiring to submit a complaint regarding indoor air quality within the Capital School District facilities must do so formally and in writing.

Indoor air complaints are investigated by The Buildings & Grounds Department. Investigations may include temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide, mold, etc. Additional parameters may be checked depending on the specific complaint. Repair, equipment modifications, and evaluations are conducted by the Buildings & Grounds Departments or an outside contractor, and an environmental contractor if necessary. Special room cleaning and disinfection may be conducted by the building custodial staff when necessary.

If you suspect a problem with the air quality of your work space, complete the Indoor Air Quality Complaint Form (link is below) and submit. When the form is submitted, it will automatically be directed to the Buildings & Grounds Department. Current Capital School District school-based staff should complete the IAQ Complaint Form with their immediate supervisor, so that they are aware of the issue.

Concerns related to temperature and humidity should be reported directly to the Buildings & Grounds on their online maintenance request form.

*To maintain HIPPA compliance, any medical condition or protected information must be documented and coordinated through the Capital School District Human Resource Office.
