In Memory of Mr. John Martin

In Memory of Mr. John Martin

Dear Senator Nation,

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Mr. John “Marty” Martin Jr., a dedicated and beloved member of the Capital School District Board of Education. Mr. Martin’s passing is a tremendous loss, not only to our district but to the entire state.

Mr. Martin was an experienced and proven leader with a career in education spanning over 33 years. In July 1991, Marty joined the Capital School District as a 6th-grade science teacher at William Henry Middle School. Throughout his professional career, his passion for education and dedication to his students led him to leadership roles across multiple districts, including Assistant Principal at Appoquinimink, Principal in the Lake Forest and Christina School Districts, and Special Education roles in the New Castle County Vo-Tech and Brandywine School Districts. Everywhere he went, Marty left an indelible mark, inspiring both students and colleagues with his unwavering commitment to excellence.

Marty’s dedication extended beyond the classroom. He served as an emcee for sports contests, tournaments, weddings, and community events. Marty was the enthusiastic voice of the annual Capital Classic basketball tournament for middle school athletes. Year after year, Marty’s lively commentary and genuine encouragement made him a beloved figure at the tournament, inspiring young athletes and energizing the crowd. His commitment demonstrated his deep-rooted belief in the power of community and his ability to bring people together through his charismatic personality.

Elected to the Capital School District Board of Education in 2014, he was elected to three terms, bringing a unique blend of preparation, humor, and vision to his role. He was elected Vice President of the Board for two terms (2016-2018) and President for two terms (2018-2020). Marty worked tirelessly on numerous committees, including the Career and Technical Education Committee, Calendar Committee, Super Senator Day Committee, and Strategic Plan Core Team. His thoughtful approach and deep care for the community strengthened the district and touched countless lives.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Martin was a cherished member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and a pillar of the broader community. He exemplified servant leadership and was deeply devoted to creating opportunities for all students to succeed.

Mr. Martin’s love for his family was central to his life. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Ronica, and a loving father to his two sons, John III and Joshua. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

The Capital School District has lost a remarkable leader, educator, and advocate, and Senator Nation has lost a friend. As we reflect on his contributions, let us honor his legacy by carrying forward his passion for education, his humor, and his belief in the transformative power of learning. The community is invited to join in celebrating the life and legacy of Mr. John “Marty” Martin Jr. at Dover High School.
